On 27th November 2010 I posted a photo of what I thought was illegal dumping in Tempe Reserve. Three massive piles of woodchip had been dumped on established landscaped gardens, flattening all the plants. A few people have spoken to me about this since, as whoever did this destroyed something that was quite beautiful. Landscaped beauty is very valued in Tempe & the locals feel strongly to keep whatever beauty they have.
80 percent of the woodchips have since been used by Marrickville Council to mulch the avenue of Norfolk Island Palms in Holbeach Avenue, the entry to Tempe Reserve. Unfortunately, a large amount of woodchips is still left where it was dumped & while some plants that are poking through seem to be hanging on to life, it won’t be long before they do die.
I post about this because today I received an email with photos from someone who had decided to take matters into their own hands. “I have given up waiting for Marrickville Council to do something about this. The mulch was 70cm high all around the Gum tree in the photograph. I couldn’t save the bushes, but at least I thought I could save the tree from collar rot & sure death. It took me just 3 minutes to shovel the mulch away from the tree trunk. I do not propose to send a bill to Marrickville Council.”
