Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club in the lead.

Something different because it is holiday time & because I want to share something I enjoyed…

Lured by an invitation on Facebook & the commentator’s voice ringing out across Gough Whitlam Park while out riding, we decided to pop into the Tempe Velodrome to watch the bike racing for a while.  It turned out that today was Day 3 of the Christmas Track Carnival.  It was a great introduction to bike racing, for me at least.  Clubs had come from the ACT, QLD & NSW & included our own local club, the Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club dressed in their distinctive red.

What I noticed immediately was the crowd.  This is a popular sport & there were many spectators.  Then I noticed the bikes.  So much variety & thay all looked fantastic.

It was exciting to watch the cyclists screaming around the 333-metre track, but it’s also the kind of sport you can chill while you watch.  We saw a number of 5-lap & 1-lap races.  Cyclists are fit people.

The event was well organized & looked very streamlined from where we were sitting.  Races were one after the other with no delay & this kept up the excitement & the attention of the spectators.   If you haven’t been to this kind of event before, it’s great fun & I recommend it.  It was also free to watch – an added bonus.  There was also a barbeque happening where you could buy something to eat.

From the website of the Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club – The club was formed in 1908 & prides itself on offering fellowship among cyclists, regardless of experience, ability, aspirations, or the equipment you own. We’re a racing & recreational riding club, so you don’t need to race to take part in our regular rides.”  They have slow rides (Saturday Slowies) as well & cater for both men & women, juniors through to seniors.  I think it’s a great gig.  For more information see –  http://www.dhbc.org.au
