Dreadful news today – the two beautiful Ghost Gums painted many times by Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira were burnt down on about 30th December 2012 in what is thought to be arson.  The trees are located 16-km from Alice Springs & featured many times in the artist’s paintings.  They were iconic to Australia’s history in my opinion.

The Department of Lands, Planning & the Environment said, “Only recently work was done around the trees to try & protect them from fires & allow as much moisture as possible to get to their roots.”

There is hope that the roots of the trees are still alive & they can be regrown, but it will never be the same.
