Petersham Park has an elegance that should be preserved.

The last community survey done by Marrickvile Council was in 2010, where they spoke to 606 residents. I have picked out content that relates to our environment.

  • 7 out of 10 residents (73%) rated the ‘provision of natural areas & green spaces’ as being very important to them & was the most important under the heading ‘Environment.’
  • 51% wanted community gardens & programs to decrease carbon emissions.
  • 4.23 out of a possible 5 points was given to landscaping & greening of local streets.
  • 4.15 out of a possible 5 points was given to the restoration of the Cooks River & its foreshores – down from 4.30 in the 2008 survey.
  • 89% thought the provision of parks & playgrounds was very important & this was the most important item in ‘Community Services.’ A satisfaction score of 3.84 was given & this is in the high range.
  • 3.77 out of a possible 5 points was given to the ‘provision of natural grass & green spaces.’ – in the high satisfaction range.
  • 3.29 out of a possible 5 points was given to the ‘landscaping & greening of local streets.’ – in the medium satisfaction range.
  • 3.22 out of a possible 5 points was given to the ‘provision of environmental initiatives such as community gardens & programs to decrease carbon emissions.’ – in the medium satisfaction range. The group 55 years plus gave the highest rating for this item, where as residents aged 18 – 34 were less satisfied at 3.13 points.
  • The survey highlighted five areas that Council should give priority to & work on first –

– Landscaping & greening of local streets.

– Restoration of the Cooks River & its foreshores.

– Provision of environmental initiatives.

– Maintenance of drainage & flood controls.

– Maintenance of footpaths & cyclepath surfaces.

  • Residents visited the Cooks River foreshore parks 44.8 out of a possible 50 & of these, Steel Park was the most popular at 32.0 out of a possible 50 points.  Mackey Park, Kendrick Park & Tempe Reserve would have shared the other 12.8 points.  I find this interesting considering these parks are so busy.
  • 94% of residents have visited a park in the previous 12 months with 45% visiting the Cooks River foreshore parks.
  • Marrickville Park, Steel Park & Petersham Park were popular parks to visit.
  • 94% of residents that use parks thought they were well maintained with 44% indicating that cleanliness was a major factor.
  • Only 27.8% of residents were aware of the free mattress pick-up service, which goes a long way to explaining the incredible amount of mattresses dumpd in our streets.
  • Maintaining green spaces & the environment came 6 & 7 in a list of 26 items that Council should be focusing on in the next 5 years (until 2015).
  • Interestingly, beautifying the streetscape came in at number 18 & cleaning up the Cooks River was second last at number 25.
