Typical of the type of garbage left in Tempe Reserve, even though the bins are less than 10 metres away.

Want to help clean up Tempe Reserve on Sunday 4th March 2012?

Tempe Reserve is a beautiful park that was once a landfill tip.  In 2003 Marrickville Council redeveloped the site into a really lovely park.  Unfortunately, many people treat Tempe Reserve like is still a tip by leaving behind loads of litter throughout the park.  Some of the litter like string, fishing line & balloons is causing serious harm to the birds that live here.

Heavy rain or strong winds carry much of this garbage into the river further polluting the area & likely causing further suffering for the wildlife that lives in & around the Cooks River.

We will be cleaning up the area from the Jets car park, along the Fig pathway, the barbeque area, the circle of Figs, the Cooks River Valley Garden, along pedestrian pathways & around the saltwater wetland.

For safety sake, we will not be cleaning the rocks or the river bank because there are too many oysters, wobbly boulders & too high a chance of injury.

If enough people participate we will clean the eastern car park next to the Robyne Webster Sports Centre & the playground, the barbeque area & surrounds.  As there are already quite a few people who have said they will participate, it looks like we will be able to do this area as well.

Everyone is welcome.  Come at 10am for an hour.

Park at the Jets Sports Club car park located on Holbeach Avenue Tempe Reserve.  Then follow the signs & walk alongside the row of Fig trees next to the water until you reach the picnic kiosks. Bring water to drink & wear suitable clothing, including gardening gloves if you have them.

Marrickville Council has kindly agreed to provide garbage bags.   To help us calculate how many bags & cold drinks we will need I would appreciate if you could drop me an email if you are coming – savingourtrees@gmail.com

Let’s show the people who use this park that we care about the wildlife that lives here & want Tempe Reserve to be kept clean & beautiful for all of us.

20th February 2012 –
